NYT Thinks Economy Not Bad Enough Yet; Demands $4Gal Gas As Subsidy For Repainting Lenin's Portrait On Their Ivory Tower

--Read More In: Blockheads | Cars | Dumb Smart People | Hypocrites | WTF !?!

the OMG WTF LOL gas station sign

Apparently, the ONLY break we all seem to be getting in this rather crappy economic climate is ~$1.55/Gal gas.

BUT NO-OO-OOOO!

That's -Not Cool- with the NYT!

There aren't yet enough suburban Society Wives clipping coupons or Hedge-Funders trading in mega-yachts. Things don't need to get better, they should get Worse!

*Coupled with a sense of timing that would make (the inventor of the guillotine)^(Marie Antoinette's cake comment) look less ironic, their Man Ezra Dyer [ed: and now Thomas L. Friedman] think that NOW is the time to introduce their bold idea to somehow save face for Al Gore.

=>As, cheap gas rankles him and his cronies.

So what's their brilliant*(awesomely bad) idea???

-Tax gas up to $4/gal no matter what the actual market rate is for it.

If that (and all the great unintended consequences) doesn't give you at least a tiny laugh, I don't know what will.

Because apparently, nobody owns cars and has to drive great distances; they all live in dense metro areas and can just hop on the electric-powered Subway to get wherever they need to go.

El Paso Texas?
-No problem. You can take the A, C, or E -just get on at 14th street.

Ely Montana?
That's not a problem either. You get on the #1,2 or 3 bus heading downtown, then hop onto the L at Union Square and finally get off at the stop just before Barcade.

SO: Go check out the full commentary on this idea over at one of the best car blogs out there:
